The journey to a broader awareness of one’s self is an essential part of the human condition. For some, forming a unifying bond with their race and religion easily traverses this. For others, such as myself, the journey may be marred by uncertainty of their past and present. By blood, I am half-American and half-Iranian. I am, as they say in Farsi, do-rageh, which translates as, “two-veined.” However, by upbringing, I am Pakistani. As an adult I separated from this culture and in the wake of this loss, I discovered new layers of my identity. When I speak of identity, I speak of humanity’s inherent complexity. It is a pastiche of both circumstance and environment, which no two people can experience in exactly the same way.
My focus is heavily considered in four regards: identity as a hybrid, identity as an exile, identity as an adaptive movement through loss and change, and identity as a reconfiguration of the self. It is my belief that one’s true identity can only be reached through the integration and re-purposing of all layers and experiences of the self, from birth to the present.
