Chant to Save
Medium: Performance for Video
Duration: 2 min. 15 seconds
Chant to Save is a split-screen single channel video performance revealing mirror selves made opposite by independent rituals. To construct a corporeal experience of blending and blurring, I merge the physical sequence of Islamic prayer with the classical sun salutation sequence of yoga, layered with the recitation of the Gayatri mantra and the Islamic call to prayer. The audio sources become inseparable to the unsuspecting ear and the movements become ceremonial, like a call to something, a search for devotion. This video seeks to propose a merging of dualities, to create a third self, evolved from the two roots. The similarities between recitation and movement are the physical channel to amalgamation.
